STATUS: Plug-in hybrid model expected for 2020 - Now built in Mexico, the midsize Q5 was updated for 2018 and with a stiffer and lighter platform that also underpins other Audi and Volkswagen models. The base engine is a 242-horsepower turbocharged four-cylinder engine connected to a seven-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters. The hotter SQ5 has a 354-horsepower supercharged 3.0-liter V-6 matched to an eight-speed automatic transmission. Audi claims the Q5 will reach 60 mph from rest in 5.9 seconds, while the SQ5 does it in 5.1. For the 2020 model year, a 367-horsepower plug-in hybrid drivetrain is available, consisting of a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder and electric motor. The standard Quattro all-wheel-drive engages the rear wheels only when tire slip is detected. The top models come with Audi's virtual cockpit, consisting of a 12.3-inch screen that replaces the traditional instrument cluster. It allows the driver to combine speedometer and tachometer displays, in different sizes, with a navigation screen and a variety of infotainment selections.
