STATUS: Automatic transmission is deleted - These subcompact sedan and hatchback models are still hanging on, even though the buyer trend is toward utility vehicles. Clearly, there's still a market for small cars with relatively spacious interiors and cargo areas. The Sonic's base four-cylinder engine was deleted for the 2019 model year, therefore all models now come with a 138-horspower turbocharged four-cylinder. The lone transmission for 2020 is a six-speed automatic as the six-speed manual has been discontinued. The LS, LT and Premier trims carry over. Available on the latter is an RS package - sedan or hatchback - that includes an aero-body kit, sport-steering wheel and other dress-up bits. Chevrolet says the Sonic's rigid body structure, wide stance and suspension components provide a sporty driving experience.
