Mercedes-Benz A class
STATUS: New for the 2019, therefore unchanged for 2020; AMG model arrives for 2020 - The A class has become the entry-level sedan for Mercedes-Benz. The CLA previously held that spot, but unlike the CLA, the A220 sedan has a much taller roofline that benefits rear-seat passengers. It has a turbocharged four-cylinder engine that puts out a respectable 188 horsepower and 221 pound-feet of torque. For 2020, you can step up to the Mercedes-AMG A35 sedan that comes with 302 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. A seven-speed paddle-shifted automatic transmission is standard. It directs power to either the front, or all four wheels when fitted with Mercedes-Benz's 4Matic hardware. AWD is standard with the A35 and is available (for $2,000) in the A220. The futuristic interior comes with side-by-side seven-inch tablet-style touchscreens for the gauges and infotainment system. Dual 10.25-inch screens are optional. Also available: Virtually all of the automaker's crash-preventing/mitigating active-safety technologies, as well as a semi-autonomous system that keeps the car at a set speed and in the correct lane. The system's Lane Change Assist can drive the A class around slower-moving traffic on marked multi-lane highways, and then return the car to the original lane.
