Mercedes-Benz CLA class (New)
STATUS: The second-generation model arrives for 2020 - The CLA class that originally launched for the 2014 model year was inspired by the larger CLS class, but at less than half the CLS's base price. For the 2020 redesign, the CLA adopts the new A-class small-car platform. The interior remains tight, but it comes with the newest Mercedes-Benz User Experience (MBUX) dashboard with a pair of 7.0- or available 12.3-inch screens. With the latter, the driver or front passenger (the camera-based system can detect which person) can scroll through various functions on the right-side screen simply by swiping their hand close to it. A console-located track pad is used to make climate, communications and navigation selections. The CLA 250's 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine makes 221 horsepower, up from the original's 208 ponies. Torque remains unchanged at 258 pound-feet. A seven-speed automatic transmission returns, although it's reworked to deliver smoother and more precise shifts. For more performance, the all-wheel-drive Mercedes-AMG CLA 35 gets a robust version of the turbo 2.0-liter with 302 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. As well the Mercedes-AMG CLA 45 (AWD) increases the output to 382 horses and 354 pound-feet. The available Driver Assistance Package provides semi-autonomous operation - including hands-free in certain circumstances - plus autonomous emergency braking and lane-keeping assist, which keeps the CLA between the lines.
